NFL free agency 2023 live updates: Latest deals, best available, news and grades
The start of the legal negotiations period this week signals the official start of NFL free agency. Teams and players may agree to terms on new contracts starting at 12 p.m. EST on Monday. Nevertheless, no free-agent agreements can be made with new teams until Wednesday at 4 p.m. EST, when the league season officially begins.
The two quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson are the subjects of the most unanswered questions. Despite rumors, Rodgers has been connected to the New York Jets. The Baltimore Ravens have placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson, allowing him to speak with any other clubs interested in the great quarterback while the Ravens are free to match any bid.
According to popular belief, the greatest announcement coming up to the 2023 NFL Draft didn’t include the Indianapolis Colts on Friday.
Thanks to a significant transaction involving receiver D.J. Moore, two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and the Chicago Bears, the Panthers now have time on their side. Carolina has cemented its place at the top of the draft and will have the opportunity on April 27 to select whatever quarterback it chooses, while Chicago accumulates the draft cash it desired.
The Colts weren’t willing to give up that kind of haul, according to conversations over the weekend with people familiar with the team’s thinking. The explanation is that they don’t think the first pick in this year’s draft is a lock or a sure thing. If there had been, Chicago most likely would have taken him and stayed.
The Colts consequently sat back and watched as their draft situation unquestionably became a little worse: after picking fourth, they are now ahead of two clubs that are desperate for a quarterback in Carolina and Houston.
Dolphins
The los Angeles Rams are trading cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Miami Dolphins for a 2023 3rd round pick and tight end Hunter Long.
The Bears
After signing TJ Edwards, the Bears signed another top FA LB in former Bills Tremaine Edmunds but it was costly. Edmunds signed a huge 4-year, $72 million deal with $50 million guaranteed, which puts him in the top 4 of highest-paid linebackers. His production doesn’t match his salary. The Bears have money to spend and are banking on potential. He’s only 24 but after 5 seasons, one has to wonder how much better can he get?
Edmunds is an athletic freak 6'4, 250 pounds with 4.5 speed. He fits Matt Eberflus’ need for speed, especially on the second level. With Edwards and Edmunds, the Bears have added a lot of range, coverage skills, and play-making ability to Eberflus’ 4–3 defense. The Bears have been aggressive with adding talent early this offseason and still have the 9th overall pick in the draft. They still need to add defensive line talent.
